A Royal Story: A Brief History of Royal Funeral Home

Royal Funeral Home is the oldest African-American family owned business in Huntsville, Alabama. Established in 1918 by Charles K. Binford. Royal is owned by David and Karen Jones-Smith. Royal’s rich African-American History is a point of pride for the Smiths. The husband and wife team (vice -president and president respectively of Royal Funeral Home) is the third generation in their family to purchase, own and operate the business. In 2000 the business was purchased by the Smiths. They are following in the footsteps of the second generation, her parents, James A. and Barbara Hundley-Jones and her grandparents, Lawrence B. and Amanda Rice-Hundley, the first generation purchasers, making this the sixty-second year of ownership by this family of the Royal Funeral Home.
